Ocean Road

Fire & Blood

The Ocean Road was one of the named routes renewed during Jaehaerys Targaryen’s ambitious program to improve roads across the Seven Kingdoms. The account places it within a wider network of royal works, but gives no specific route, termini, or individual construction history for the Ocean Road itself.

Place in the Road Network

The Ocean Road is named alongside the Rosroad, River Road, and Goldroad as one of the roads that followed the beginning of Jaehaerys’s building program. The text distinguishes between roads that already existed in rough form and those newly created, but does not identify which category applied to the Ocean Road.

Jaehaerys’s Road-Building Program

Near the end of 62 AC, Jaehaerys looked beyond the cobbled streets, cisterns, and fountains he had provided for King’s Landing and turned his attention to travel across the realm. From the air, he saw settlements, rivers, forests, hills, and fields, but few proper roads. His plan was to make road-building a project spanning the Seven Kingdoms.

The work involved both improving existing tracks and creating new roads. Existing routes were remade by filling ruts, spreading gravel, and bridging streams. The program continued for decades, through the rest of Jaehaerys’s reign and into that of his successor. The account includes the Ocean Road among its products, without specifying its construction dates or the works undertaken along it.

Significance and Limits of the Record

The Ocean Road’s place in the royal program associates it with Jaehaerys’s effort to improve movement across a realm whose roads were often no more than rough tracks. The Old King’s monument at the Citadel of Oldtown later commemorated the larger achievement as binding the land together and making seven kingdoms one. That statement concerns the network as a whole; the account does not attribute a particular political or economic consequence to the Ocean Road alone.
